Our Storefront
Located in the Cadillac Arts Centre on the corner of Cadillac Blvd. and St. Paul, as part of the arts district of Little Village on the East Side of Detroit, our store is approximately 1400 square feet of books and records. We offer comfortable window benches and counter seating to encourage customer to take their time and peruse our books at their leisure. We also have a cosy children’s section with seating and some toys for the little ones.
We’re one block north of Jefferson (and Pewabic), 2 blocks south of Kercheval on Cadillac Blvd, just east of Indian Village, about 10 minutes down the road from the entrance to Belle Isle, and 15 minutes from downtown Detroit; or from the east, about 10 minutes from the Grosse Pointe communities. There’s ample street parking just in front of the store on St Paul.

Our books
We specialize in the arts in general: visual, graphic, design, photography, architecture, and music. We also have extensive offerings in the artisan crafts: cooking, preserving, woodworking, construction, and traditional ways of making. We have a large collection of literary fiction and poetry, both contemporary and classic. There are also curated sections of academic material: theory and philosophy, radicalism and labor studies, history, and the social sciences.
Everything in the store is used—some rare, all well done. If the book is still in print, it’ll be at half or less of the current in print price. We also have many unique items priced by their value, not what an algorithm spits out. We keep everything reasonable and hope that you’ll find that book you’ve never known you were seeking.
The Cadillac Arts Centre
A bold reuse of an abandoned 25,000 square foot building into a creative hub for community, the arts, and culture, designed by M1DTW in collaboration with Castor Design. We share the space with fellow curated spaces, Bowerbird Home, Take Me Home Detroit, Amend Community Garden, and Black Art Library. Our neighbors in the building also include The Villages CDC and Inside Out Literary Arts, as well as numerous incredible artists and creators.
Bowerbird Home is a home goods store focusing on timeless, high quality, minimal pieces. Bringing together both vintage and modern, Erik and Grace carefully select distinctive housewares, warm textiles, and striking furniture to create a selection of goods that will enhance your space and last the test of time, both in quality and design.
Take Me Home is a gallery and design space focusing on the collaborative work of Jim Schatz of J Schatz Studio and artist Peter Souza, Jr. The space allows for the presentation of their work in clay and wood along with unique ceramic pieces created in their studio in Warren, MI. Innovative, beautiful pieces that simultaneously feel so personal to their work, and yet so evocative to their beholders, Take Me Home is a place of objects as expressions.
Black Art Library is an ambitious collection of books on Black artists, an act of curation to uplift voices and provide community education through access to books. Spearheaded by Head Librarian in Charge, Asmaa Walton, the collection currently has an archive at the Shepherd, and looks to expand its footprint and community offerings with this new storefront.
Amend is a living installation as a community garden. Lead by Allana Clarke, Amend cultivates heirloom crops from the black diaspora on a previously vacant lot neighboring the arts center. Preserving the history and genetics of these crops, the educational community garden creates a space for reflection and sustenance.
Located under 2 blocks from the Shepherd Grounds, with the Shepherd, the Charles McGee Legacy Sculpture Garden, It Takes a Village Skatepark, and restaurants Warda Patisserie and Father Forgive Me, and just a stone’s throw away from the Lantern Building, featuring Signal Return, Progressive Arts Studio Collective, Collect Beer Bar, and Coup D’etat, the Cadillac Art Centre adds another key nexus for the area hailed by Time magazine as one of the World’s Greatest Places 2025.
